Product Features & Requirements

What is the Slipstream swim machine?

Slipstream is a portable, battery-powered swim-in-place machine that creates a smooth, even current for swimming in home pools. The swim unit weighs approximately 16 kg and rolls on wheels for easy positioning. A rechargeable 24 V lithium battery pack (approx. 11 kg) powers the propeller-based propulsion system, generating a strong and consistent 9,500–11,500 litres per minute swim current.

It offers fully adjustable resistance, allowing swimmers to control the speed from zero up to a 1:20 per 100 metre pace using a simple dial. With settings from 0 to 11, you can easily fine-tune the current to match your training intensity.

The design engages the whole body without impact on the joints, making it ideal for lap swimming, triathlon training, aquatic fitness, rehabilitation, and even fun family use.

Key features include a broad, deep current with minimised turbulence (thanks to integrated turning vanes and conditioning grills), a digital battery-level display, USB charging ports on the power box, and an optional debris-collection screen that helps keep your pool clean while you swim.

Experienced swimmers will recognise that a 1:20 per 100 metre pace is a strong training speed. Many swimmers can hold this pace for a short effort but will find it challenging to maintain over time. To get a sense of how fast this feels, try timing yourself over 100 metres in a standard 25 metre Australian pool.

What are the benefits of using Slipstream instead of a traditional pool, swim jets, or a swim spa?

Slipstream lets you swim in place in your existing pool — no renovations required. Skip crowded public pools, lane sharing and endless tumble turns. It engages all major muscle groups using natural water resistance (water is far denser than air), delivering a challenging, full-body workout.

Unlike jets or tethers, Slipstream produces a smooth, even current that closely mimics open-water swimming. It’s also far more compact and significantly more affordable than built-in swim jets or swim spas — which can cost $15,000 to $40,000+ more.

Because it’s battery-powered, there’s no plumbing or permanent electrical installation required. That means no hardwiring, no structural changes, and no council approvals in most cases. Slipstream is easy to set up, move and store.

In short, you get a premium swim workout — or low-impact aquatic exercise — at home, without the hassle.

Is Slipstream good for novice swimmers or is it only for strong swimmers?

Slipstream is ideal for swimmers of all levels — including beginners. You don’t need to be a strong swimmer to enjoy or benefit from it. In fact, many customers use Slipstream to help new swimmers build endurance, improve technique and gain confidence in the water.

If you’re getting back into swimming, managing ageing joints, or rehabbing an injury, Slipstream is a perfect addition to your pool. It provides low-impact aquatic exercise that’s gentle on the body while still delivering an effective workout.

The key is adjustability. You can set the current to a very gentle pace, and beginners can position themselves further back from the unit where the flow is broader, smoother and less intense. The consistent, even current helps swimmers develop proper body position and rhythm without constantly stopping and pushing off the wall like in a traditional pool.

Many parents, adult learners and swim instructors appreciate Slipstream because it creates a supportive environment to practise safely at your own pace. As skills and fitness improve, simply dial up the challenge.

Best of all, you can skip the drive to public pools or swim clubs, avoid waiting for lanes, and feel completely comfortable training in your own space.

Is Slipstream good for swim instruction and coaching?

Yes! Slipstream is an outstanding tool for swim instruction and coaching. Because swimmers remain in one position while swimming, coaches can clearly observe stroke technique, body position and breathing patterns without having to walk up and down the pool. This makes it ideal for real-time feedback and precise technique correction.

Slipstream’s adjustable speed allows instructors to tailor the current to suit every swimmer — from beginners learning the fundamentals to advanced athletes refining race technique. Coaches often pair Slipstream with an Underwater Swim Mirror (sold separately), allowing swimmers to instantly see and correct their form.

Whether you’re teaching freestyle, backstroke or advanced skills such as bilateral breathing, Slipstream provides a consistent, controlled environment that accelerates learning and builds confidence.

For even more effective coaching, add underwater headphones (such as Zygo or similar systems), enabling coaches to speak directly to swimmers while they’re swimming and provide real-time feedback without stopping the session.

Slipstream is not just for swimming!

While Slipstream was originally designed for swim training, our customers have discovered all sorts of creative ways to use it.

Beyond lap swimming and triathlon preparation, many families use Slipstream to create a mini “lazy river” effect for fun pool days. Kids love bodyboarding in the current or floating along on inflatable tubes.

Slipstream is also excellent for aquatic fitness. You can walk, jog or perform water aerobics against the current for low-impact cardio that’s gentle on the joints while still building strength and endurance. Some customers add aquatic dumbbells, flotation belts or resistance bands to turn their pool into a complete full-body workout space.

Physiotherapists and rehabilitation specialists have also incorporated Slipstream into aquatic therapy programs, helping clients rebuild strength, balance and mobility following injury.

We even have customers using kayaks, stand-up paddle boards and training specifically for surf paddling to build upper-body endurance for getting out through the break. And yes — we’ve had some very happy dogs join in the swimming sessions too!

In short, Slipstream transforms any pool into a versatile and dynamic aquatic environment — ideal for fitness, family fun and serious swim training alike.

Instilation and Pool requirements

What pool conditions are required for Slipstream?

Slipstream is designed to fit almost any in-ground or above-ground pool. We’ve developed a simple Planning Guide to help you quickly determine the best location in your pool. The guide also highlights situations where a small modification may be required to ensure optimal compatibility.

For example, if your pool has a continuous internal ledge around the perimeter, we may provide set-backs to ensure the Slipstream unit sits securely and makes proper contact with the pool wall.

Slipstream extends approximately 890 mm below the waterline, so your pool must be at least 900 mm deep. The adjustable rail system accommodates pools with 75–300 mm of freeboard (deck-to-water distance) and up to 50 mm of coping overhang.

The unit is compatible with concrete, plaster, fibreglass and vinyl-lined pools, and is designed with smooth finishes to avoid damaging liners.

For best results, position Slipstream at least 3 metres from the opposite wall to allow ample swimming space. Installation in the shallow end is recommended so you can comfortably stand when not swimming.

If you have an above-ground pool, you can add Slipstream’s Above-Ground Pool Kit (sold separately). This includes a support shelf for the battery box and a protective sleeve to safeguard pool liners that wrap over the top rail.

Can I easily move the Slipstream between pools or store it away?

Assembly is straightforward and typically takes just 10–15 minutes straight out of the box. We provide step-by-step videos and a Quick Start Guide with every purchase, which you can also review online.

Installing the unit in your pool takes only seconds. Simply lower the swim machine into the water so the stainless steel rail rests securely on the pool deck. Plug Slipstream into the battery box, turn the dial to “0” to initialise the unit, then slowly adjust the dial to your preferred swim current setting. The resistance is fully adjustable, so you can fine-tune it to suit your workout.

That’s it — you’re ready to swim.

When you’ve finished, turn the dial back to “0”, unplug the battery box, lift the unit out of the pool and wheel it to your preferred storage location. Then simply place the protective cover over the unit.

Usage Tips and Training programs

How do I adjust the current and swimming pace?

The water flow (current speed) is fully adjustable using the dial on the battery box. It ranges continuously from off (0) to full power (11).

Beginners or those doing lighter workouts can swim at a lower setting or position themselves further back from the unit. The further back you swim (for example, around 3 metres back compared to 60–90 cm from the unit), the slower, wider and smoother the current becomes. Swimming further back creates a broader, deeper flow that’s more forgiving and easier to stay within.

For beginner swimmers, it can actually help to turn the speed up slightly and swim further back. This makes it easier to remain centred in the current, even if your stroke isn’t perfectly straight or consistent. Swimming further back also allows you to naturally adjust your pace — move closer to the unit to increase speed, or drift further away to slow down.

Advanced swimmers can turn the unit up to maximum power. The Performance and Sport models deliver top speeds equivalent to approximately 1:20 and 1:45 per 100 metres respectively, offering a strong race-pace training experience.

Experienced swimmers will recognise that a 1:20 per 100 metres pace is challenging to sustain. Many swimmers can reach that speed for a short effort but find it difficult to maintain over longer distances. To get a feel for this pace, try timing yourself over 100 metres in a standard 25 metre pool.

For optimal performance, ensure the top of Slipstream’s outlet grill sits at the pool’s waterline. Adjust the rail height if needed — correct alignment provides the smoothest, most consistent flow.

What kinds of workouts can I do with a Slipstream?

Almost any swim or water workout can be done with Slipstream. Much like a treadmill or exercise bike, it suits beginners looking to improve their fitness just as well as strong swimmers, coaches refining stroke technique, or even an IRONMAN athlete preparing for the 3.8 km swim leg.

You can swim continuously against the current for endurance training or complete structured sessions with intervals and sprint efforts. For example, a beginner session might include a 5-minute warm-up, followed by 5 × 1-minute swims with 1-minute rest between each, finishing with a gentle cool-down.

Slipstream isn’t just for freestyle. You can swim breaststroke, butterfly and backstroke to engage different muscle groups and add variety to your sessions.

Triathletes often use Slipstream to build endurance and simulate open-water conditions in a controlled environment. Swim coaches use it to improve stroke mechanics — and when paired with an underwater mirror accessory (sold separately), swimmers can watch and correct their technique in real time.

Beyond lap swimming, Slipstream is excellent for aquatic fitness. Walk or jog against the current for low-impact cardio, or use kickboards, water weights, resistance belts or other aquatic equipment to increase the challenge.

It’s also popular for family fun and swim lessons. Kids can bodyboard in a gentle current or learn to swim at a lower speed in a safe, controlled setting.

In short, Slipstream can be incorporated into virtually any swim routine — from endurance sets and stroke drills to recovery sessions and water aerobics. We recommend mixing strokes and varying intervals to keep workouts engaging and effective.

To maintain your warranty coverage, do not leave Slipstream submerged in the pool when it’s not in use.

Troubleshooting

What if the Slipstream unit won’t turn on or the motor won’t run?

First, make sure the power supply is charged.  Second, once plugged into the power supply, make sure you have turned the speed dial to “0” for 2 seconds.  This initializes the motor and you will often hear a few beeps.  Once initialized, turn up the speed and the current will flow.  The majority of the time a non-working motor is due to forgetting to turn the unit to “0”.

I had my first swim and I am swimming up on the unit even though I have the speed turned up. I’m not swimming at the top speed for my unit, what might cause that?

The current is wide and deep enough to allow you to swim comfortably in place.

However, depending on your swimming strength or experience in lane swimming, you may occasionally drift out of the strongest part of the current and not receive its full resistance.

To help stay centred, we recommend placing a small marker on the pool floor beneath you — such as a coin or small weight — so you can maintain your position in the middle of the flow.

We also suggest swimming around 1.2 to 1.5 metres back from the unit. At this distance, the current becomes wider and deeper, creating a smoother and more forgiving swim experience.

What if the power supply or battery gets wet?

The Slipstream battery box is not waterproof but the 24V DC battery is rated IP67, so it can withstand rain or splashes. However, if the battery is pushed or dropped in the pool, immediately fish it out, lay it on its side to drain, and let it dry completely. The unit is designed so you don’t directly touch battery terminals when retrieving it.
